Dr. Sean Hashmi

I came to America when I was 10 years old. I started training in martial arts when I was 15 years old. However, my career in the health and fitness industry didn’t really begin until 1994 when I was appointed to run the UCLA Taekwondo program. After this, I continued to teach at various martial arts studios and also started personal training on the side. Life was very simple back then. In September, 2004 my sister passed away due to an epileptic seizure. She was only twenty-four years old. Truth be told, I hated the doctors who took care of her and treated us so poorly because we didn’t have health insurance. So I made a promise to my sister that I would become a doctor. A doctor who would truly care about his patients. One who would try to a difference in the lives of every person he came across. Over the last 14 years I have held true to that promise. I have started numerous health education and fitness programs in inner-city communities, given health and fitness education seminars to hundreds of people, and now I am working as an Internal Medicine/Nephrology Physician.

How I Started In Health and Fitness
My mother sold her jewelry to pay for my first martial arts class when I was 15 years old. We were going through some very hard times and she wanted me to be able to protect our family.

Why I Love It
It gave me hope during a very dark time in my life. It is now a part of me. Working out is like eating, I have to do it.

How I Stay Motivated
I look for role models for myself and try to emulate them. I set small but achievable goals and constantly build on them.

Fitness Resume
I ran my first Taekwondo studio at the age of 18. In 1994 I became the head instructor for UCLA Taekwondo and ran the program for 4 years. I also started working as a personal trainer in 1994 and worked with hundreds of clients over the last 16 years. During this time, I obtained a Masters degree in Physiological Science at UCLA and went on to Medical School at the University of California, San Diego. Afterwards, I completed my residency training at UCLA-Olive View Medical Center in Internal Medicine. I then did my fellowship training in Nephrology at UCLA. During this time, my research was devoted to diabetes and obesity. After reviewing the scientific literature on numerous weight-loss diets out there, I designed the 3-step diet. I tested this diet in a 6 month controlled trial with tremendous results. Currently, I am starting a bootcamp in Woodland Hills, California
